This is the direction you stand while synthing.  IE.  If you synthing with a Earth Crystal and you want less failures, face south.  If you want more HQ or skillups, face South-East.  When sything lumber, try to face east and you should get more HQ.
 
I read some threads on Alla trying to disprove this but it doesn't hurt to turn you char a bit when synthing.
 
if you look up in the sky on a clear night, you can see some stars are different colours.  I think this is where this originated.

it is only crystal dependent.  day does effect the synth but the direction you face depends on the crystal you are using.
